Should this be split into separate しかめる and ひそめる entries?
I’ve proposed a sorted unified entry, but separate entries (as other dicts do) might be better – defer to editors, natch.
They are certainly similar terms, both meaning roughly “scowl (in disgust, anger, etc.)”, but ひそめる is used for one’s brow, while しかめる is used for face (according to dicts; I saw 眉をひそめる yesterday).
There is roughly an overlapping sense of “scowl, grimace”, so I’ve put that into a general sense, then split the separate senses (knit brow vs. pull a face) into separate senses, with links to set phrases for clarity. |
