Although for certain types of loans only 利息 is used, 利子 can also refer to interest on loans (as well as deposits). It's customary to use 利子 for interest paid by the borrower and 利息 for interest earned by the lender (but this is just a matter of perspective; it's the same money).
The links above also point out that JP Bank uses 利子 for interest earned on deposits while other banks use 利息. I think the entries should be put back to how they were.

GG5, 中辞典, ルミナス, Daijirin and Daijisen all say that 利息 and 利子 mean the same. 中辞典 simply points to the 利子 entry.

Updating this to properly distinguish 利子 from 利息. Definitions:

慣用的に、利子は貯金などに対して発生するので「受け取れるもの」、利息は借入れなどに対して発生するので「支払うもの」と使い分けます。そのため、ローンで支払う手数料を「利子」と呼ぶことはあまりありません。あくまでもローンで支払う手数料は「利息」です。
