I believe we usually don't apply the [rK] tag in rare / archaic entries.
See entry 2856528 for example. |

憂戚 is in Koj and Daijisen; 憂慼 seems only to be in Jitenon. 慼 is a very rare kanji - it isn't in JIS 208 but is in JIS 212/213. I'd keep the entry with the [rare] tag. The xref seems unnecessary. |

After all that, I forgot to add the kanji.
I marked 憂慼 [rK], but on the other hand I'm not sure that 憂戚, using 戚/せき to mean "grief", is particularly common in modern Japanese either. |

One note: I didn't pull "憂愁" out of a hat as a synonym/cross-reference for "grief" (as there are many "grief" synonyms to choose from). dictionary.goo.ne.jp gives a definition of ゆうせき of
うれい悲しむこと。
It gives the exact same definition for 憂愁, the two terms share the same initial kanji, and looking at the N-gram corpus it certainly seemed common enough to be a reasonably safe suggestion.

This would be the first entry in this dictionary to include 慼, as far as I can see, a kanji which means "sorrowful, mournful, sorrow, grieve".
On its own I wouldn't say it is common enough to matter one way or the other( 憂戚 is already rare enough as it is), but I think the etymological value "what does kinship 戚 have to do with grieving?" is very high. (At least, this is why I went researching this term)
There are a few other rare, grieving-related words that appear to have similar derivations, but which are not listed in this dictionary. 惨戚・慼, 愁戚・慼, 戚・慼容... Really, these appear to be primarily Chinese... (as does this entry - google news gives ~200 results, but all in Chinese).
I don't think this dictionary would be any worse off for deleting this entry entirely, but there does seem to be some evidence for its existence. That said, I think marking it [rare] with a pointer to a more useful synonym would make the entry less "dangerous" to someone looking for a word for "grief" (I think it is unambiguously [rare] in any case) |
