I think we can/should. All the JEs do it.
I'll amend this one, approve and reopen as we should go through with Marcus' May 26 suggestion of a revised format. That can be self-approved I think. |

Should we capitalise "snake" (and the other zodiac names)? |

I think senses 2-4 should be tagged, and probably "[obs]" is OK ("used for terms that were in use in the Meiji and early Showa periods, but are no longer in general use").
I'll close it fix an xref and reopen. I'm quite happy for this to be the pattern for other Chinese zodiac entries. |

it might also be a candidate for "obs", given that this entire system of telling the time has been superceded.
i wouldn't go "dated", as to me that suggests that it's the kind of thing that your uncle or grandpa might still say |

I think we should tag all terms related to ancient concepts with a [dated] or [arch] tag, so that these entries can be filtered
out of searches. |

Could we do that by making the glosses "direction of the snake (south-southeast)" and "month of the snake (fourth month of the lunar calendar)"? |

The point of using [dated] or [arch] or whatever on senses 2-4 is that they aren't used currently, unlike sense 1.
There's other ways of saying "10 am" or "south-southeast" or "April" used today, and I think it'd be helpful to somehow
indicate this to people, not least for reverse searches. |

Given that Chinese zodiac itself is ancient, I don't think it's necessary to tag the associated times, directions and months as archaic or dated. Prog lists them all. I'm not sure I'd actually consider them separate senses but it's definitely neater this way.
I hear "year of the snake" more often than "year of the serpent". The JEs and Wikipedia capitalise it. Should we do the same here?

this is my suggestion for how to format our Chinese zodiac entries. I don't know if [dated] is right (or if they should be [arch]), and I'm happy for
anybody else to take a stab at this however they see fit. |
