I think if we add "home country" to sense 1, that should cover it.
"suzerain" fits sense 2, I think? The bit in brackets is maybe too long (or entirely unnecessary), though. |

I think Rene's interpretation is probably right, and it's best not to try and put that as a sense. |

"this country" is in nikk: ③ (「ほんこく」とも) この国。当国。
more examples of what NIcolas saw:
"外国会社には、本国の商号や本店所在地、資本金や役員が登記されています。"
https://shiodome.co.jp/js/blog/1340
https://gaishishukatsu.com/archives/32935
"外資系は所詮日本支社。なんちゃってグローバルで満足するな..."
"もちろんマネージャー以上になれば、今度は本国に対するレポーティングをしなければいけないので英語が必要にはなります。"
https://www.enworld.com/blog/2019/11/gaishi-images
"設立して間もないころはとくに本国とのやり取りが多くなるため、高い英語力が必要とされます。" |

I think the 本国 in the sense Nicolas saw could also be treated as a "subsense" or part of sense 1, "one's own country", i.e. "the country
where (one/a company) is based(/from)". on the other hand, daij and nikk all explicitly define sense 1 in relation to a person: "その人の国籍の
ある国" "その人の生まれ育った国。" "その人の生まれ育った国。" |

i know for a fact that my japanese has really gone to total crap in the 10 years since i left japan, so i don't want to make an ass of myself if i'm wrong. but are you sure that 本国 really means "country of a company's headquarters" in that sentence? i read it as meaning something like "...although mostly dealing with *my own country*, i still need english" or something.
is my translation totally wrong? where's the reference for this meaning "country of a company's headquarters"? |

Probably an abbreviation of 本社の国 or 本部国, etc.

I just saw a Japanese person use this in the sense of 'country where the company headquarters are', in the sentence:
外資系の化粧品会社に勤めていて、本国とやり取りするのに英語が必要です |
