I don't think a 短期大学 would ever be called a "community college", despite the similarities. コミュニティカレッジ is used for community colleges in the US.

However, "junior college" seems to be the more common translation; my dad’s friend, who works as an English teacher at a 短期大学, didn’t know what a community college was.
