I mean, OK, it means that too, but it much more specifically means "being the home teacher (of a class)", not "being 
in charge (of a class)", which is much wider.

I does mean "being in charge of". 担任する takes an object. All the JE examples are about school classes and almost all the translation include "charge". I don't think having vs on sense 2 is helpful.
How about adding this to sense 1?
