I think "constitution" belongs on sense 4.
The "corpse" sense appears to be archaic. |

This keeps coming up - someone tried to add からだ as a reading to the 身体・しんたい entry in 2019.
The JEs and Koj only have しんたい for 身体. The other kokugos list 身体 as a form for からだ but have it later than 体; which matches what we have.
I don't propose to merge the entries again, but I'll suggest a note on the 身体・しんたい entry similar to the one on sense 1 here. |

I have no changes to suggest, but wanted to bring attention to this site. It
wasn't well known at the time this entry was last edited. I always flip through
this when I'm unsure of the reading or pitch accent for something
Hearing a lot more からだ than しんたい, especially when not in a compound |

- I didn't mean to imply that manga was the only place I've run into 身体+からだ, just that manga was the place where I mostly run into furigana.
- these manga had furigana on every word so this should rule out so-called 'creative furigana'.
- 76 results on aozora bunko for 身体+からだ
- yes, all furigana
- oddly enough, only 23 results for 体+からだ
- (probably too common to add furigana to)
- I think many japanese just find 身体 more visually appealing than a single-kanji form?
- I'm not against the split, as I mentioned. |

I don't think it invalidates the split. The merge was messy, and 身体/しんたい keeps its "ichi1" tag. 身体 may well be being *glossed* as からだ in manga, but all the JEs have only しんたい as the reading. The Igaku EB dictionary, which has readings, only has it read しんたい.
I really think they're best kept apart. I'm not fussed if the 身体 in the からだ entry were marked as "spect1", but I'd prefer if there was some good evidence as the dictionaries are not saying it. |

Luce is probably right.
Does that mean we have to undo the split? |

sorry for the nsfw example, but in works that I've read that were supplied with plentiful furigana (that is, manga), 身体 (when not in a compound) has always been glossed as からだ. I haven't kept count but I'm pretty sure I've seen this furigana from multiple publishers and multiple authors. this is what I was referring to earlier.
basically, it's not a marginal reading. |

luce made an interesting point.
How do you read 身体が弱い?
I always assumed that 身体 should be read しんたい.
But in an expression like this ... |

I don't mind the split, but think that 身体 should keep a prio marker
half of the time I see からだ it is written as 身体
try this: pick a random expression with 体, replace it with 身体 and plug into the n-grams |

I was just thinking about doing the same split myself!
How about putting [oK] on 身体, 躰 and 躯?
You just don't write からだ that way in modern Japanese. |

Proposing splitting 身体/しんたい off to it's own entry. Having 身体 read からだ only appears in Daijirin, and is a pretty rare gikun reading. It should not be the basis of a merge. |
