Of course, 堂々 is still a 形容動詞 because it's a tari-adjective, and "taru-adjective" is just a name to describe how tari-adjectives conjugate in modern Japanese.
Taru-adjectives and tari-adjectives are the same thing, just like na-adjectives and nari-adjectives.
Therefore, I think the gloss needs to be either "na-adjectives and taru-adjectives", or "na-adjectives, taru-adjectives, nari-adjectives and tari-adjectives". |

daijs: "活用のある自立語で、文中において単独で述語になることができ、言い切りの形が、口語では「だ」、文語では「なり」「たり」で終わるもの。" |
|
Comments: |
According to the definition, taru-adjectives can't be considered 形容動詞 because they don't function as a predicate and they have no conclusive form (you can't say 堂々だ), which would make na-adjectives the only 形容動詞 in modern Japanese.
Nari-adjectives and tari-adjectives are 形容動詞 but they only appear in classical Japanese. |

Is "na-adjective" really a common translation
of 形容動詞 or is it a separate English/JSL
construct that actually only refers to the
subset of 形容動詞 that are used with な? I
think it's the second as such I don'tthink
"na-adjective" belongs here. |

As long as it's not the first gloss, I see no problem with it. "Na-adjective" is a very common translation for this part of speech so it's definitely worth having.
I think the "taru-adjective, etc." part is potentially confusing because it's not clear what's included in "etc.". I'd just stick with "na-adjective". |

I think "na-adjective" is misleading. daijs says"... 言い切りの形が、口語では「だ」、文語では「なり」「たり」で終わるもの。「静かだ」「静かなり」
「堂々たり」の類。" 堂々 isn't a na-adjective. |
