I think calling them "small pieces" may cause confusion with katsuobushi shavings (削り節).
The fish are certainly small, but the pieces may be half or a quarter of the entire fish.

Yes, かつおぶし is a traditional wedding gift, and it's sometimes written using the (very rare) ateji form of 勝男武士. but I don't think that form is common enough (1/600th of the usage) to flag it in that way. |
