If we're including "sports day" we should have the AmE equivalent as well. I've read the discussion below and I agree with Marcus that the "day" glosses are perfectly valid.

I disagree. I don't rhink the most literal 
meaning is necessarily the beat. I think 
"sports day", "field day" will be 
thebetter translation in probably more 
cases than not.
