I think those kokugo explanations align well with the term "anecdote" in English. It doesn't need extension or modification.

daijr: その人の隠れた一面を知らせる、世間にあまり知られていない面白い話。エピソード。
smk: その人の伝記の本筋に直接は関係しないが、その人間味を物語る材料とするに足る裏話。エピソード。〔狭義では、謹厳で評判な偉人のそれを指す〕
meikyo: ある人に関する、あまり世間に知られていない話。逸聞。アネクドート。
shinkoku: 世にあまり知られていない話。逸聞。エピソード。「━の多い人物」
sankoku:
〔逸＝記録からもれる〕
①〔ある人物の行動などについて〕あまり世の中に知られていないはなし。逸聞。
「偉人の━」
②興味深いはなし。エピソード。
「有名な━」

all kokugos specify that it's not a well-known story/episode
i think this is why sankoku added a new sense for the common and seemingly paradoxical use as "有名な逸話" (see the sankei article)
someone might argue this is similar to "anecdote"'s etymology, but i still agree with sankoku's choice and think it should be divided in two senses

gg5: その本には歴史上の人物の有名な逸話がたくさん載せてある.　The book contains large numbers of famous anecdotes about historical figures.

Even GG5 has a "有名な逸話" example. I don't think "not well-known" is needed.
