As it's a euphemistic term, I think we should lead with the euphemistic gloss. It's also the most commonly used term in English.
I think it should be singular. |

"Comfort woman" is not a great term, but it's certainly the actual term used overwhelmingly in English. It's euphemistic, but so is the original Japanese term, so I think it's the most appropriate translation and it has to be here. (And I'd say probably as the first/only real gloss.) I think it would definitely be bowdlerization to remove it.
-
"forced prostitute" isn't enough, as 慰安婦 specifically refers to (forced) prostitutes who served the military, esp. by the Japanese in WWII, though Japanese Wikipedia applies the term to all (forced) military prostitutes. There are unfortunately still lots of women throughout the world today working as forced prostitutes for non-military, but they aren't called 慰安婦.
-
I think the quotation marks around "comfort woman" are problematic because a search for "starts with 'comfort woman'" will return no results (and "starts with" is the default option for search in JMdictDB).
-
I'd say this is best handled with an [expl] or a [lit]. The best definition is given by English Wikipedia on their "forced prostitution" page as it stresses that it's a euphemism and gives its true ugliness.

This is a sensitive and contentious topic and term. I don't like "comfort woman", which is of course a 直訳 translation and carries no nuance of coercion. If it's there at all it should be in quotes. |

* Put “comfort woman” first – it’s the common term in English too
* note “military”
* Link to full form (as dicts do)
(Finally learned term today.) |
