Without that "one ingredient", I'd argue it's missing the key element that makes shortcake "shortcake". But I agree that "ショートケーキ" would still be used to refer to American shortcake. I'm fine with this gloss. |

I think Japanese shortcakes are still shortcakes, just that they replace one ingredient with another.
enwiki for example:
"Strawberry shortcake is a widely known dessert made with shortcake. Sliced strawberries are mixed with sugar and allowed to sit an
hour or so, until the strawberries have surrendered a great deal of their juices (macerated). The shortcakes are split and the
bottoms are covered with a layer of strawberries, juice, and whipped cream, typically flavored with sugar and vanilla. The top is
replaced, and more strawberries and whipped cream are added onto the top. Some convenience versions of shortcake are not made with a
shortcake (i.e. biscuit) at all, but instead use a base of sponge cake or sometimes a corn muffin. Japanese-style strawberry
shortcakes use a sponge cake base, and are a popular Christmas treat in Japan."
I think it's weird to treat it as if the Japanese version is not a shortcake at all considering google image results for [ショートケー
キ] and [shortcake -japanese] are so similar. And a "proper" US/UK strawberry shortcake would still be referred to as a ショートケーキ
in Japanese, surely. |

In BrE, "shortcake" refers to shortbread. In AmE, it refers to a type of cake made with short pastry. In Japanese, it refers to a strawberry sponge cake. |
