文化庁が発表した平成17年度「国語に関する世論調査」では、(1)自分より職階が上の人に「お疲れ様(でした)」を使う人が69.2パーセント、「ご苦労様(でした)」を使う人が15.1パーセント。また、(2)自分より職階が下の人に「お疲れ様(でした)」を使う人が53.4パーセント、「ご苦労様(でした)」を使う人が36.1パーセントという結果が出ている。
