Due to dictionary translations, many Japanese speakers translate ほとんど directly to "almost", and use it in a manner grammatically similar to that of ほとんど. This results in many mistakes. For example, "Almost Japanese enjoy cherry blossom viewing." and "Almost people know Toyota cars." The English "almost" carries the meaning of "not", so a sentence such as "I almost eat breakfast everyday" means "I never eat breakfast", not "I usually eat breakfast". To avoid almost mistakes, this entry really should mention "almost all" before "almost". |
