In the Japanese MOD's glossary of 水中音響用語 (linked above), 信儀 is defined as "アクティブソーナーにおける一連の送信及び受信" and "echo ranging" is given as the English translation. 単発探信 is translated as "single ping".
Not sure about "echo ranging".

I was curious about 探信/たんしん which is in Unidic but nowhere else. I think it's an abbreviation of 探傷信号 (searching signal) which fits the radar/sonar context. Maybe worth an entry. Otherwise this one can probably be deleted.

Doesn’t seem to be very commonplace, but it is certainly used and should be added for clarity for non native learners who might run into it in various media outlets (novels/manga/shows). As I didn’t find it in the dictionary I had to use native sources for clarity, even though the kanjis are definitely self explanatory enough. |
