(I can read 広辞苑 better now, 5 months on…)
  Comments:
* Add [exp] (explanatory) translations, which *really* clarify things for me.
I heard this used in the “intending to persuade and instead being persuaded oneself” sense (which as per 広辞苑 is the current sense).
The figurative translations are idiomatic in English (indicate a similar reversal), but have completely different meanings (e.g., “going for wool” means “seeking to get rich, but ending up losing money”), unrelated to the *persuasion* sense (I don’t know a good English idiom for this sense).
