I misguessed the reading and double checked. If you have a ref for  けん, you could put it back, but I've found no evidence.  All online refs give いぬ.  Not in sankoku. My IME doesn't complete ざしきけん either.

See last ref (yahoo) for [dated] suggestion. Conversation between two apparent Japanese natives, one who hears the expression from an old woman and doesn't recognize it, another who explains its former relevance.

Makes sense to me.  In modern times, nearly *all* Japanese dogs would be 座敷犬.  This is opposed to dogs who used to be kept outside of the house (for cleanliness/etc.).  But that's not much of a thing anymore, so it would seem this word has lost its utility.
