I'd suggest that we could add a [fig] gloss, but "cornered (like a) rat" is surely already a well known figure of speech in English.

It's not described as figurative in the kokugos (although I suspect it's only used in idioms and proverbs).
I understand the intention behind Marcus's 2019 amendment but I think a literal translation plus an x-ref works better here.
