Fair enough. Thanks.

Here's the full quote that prompted me to add another
definition

「前にも申し上げたことがあると思いますが、こと研究において上司も部下もあり
ません。尖った研究者を大胆に処遇するために、昨年人事制度も改訂していま
す。レファレンスは世界の最先端です。社内の第一人者で満足せず、どんどん
枠を飛び越えて行ってください。」

I asked a Japanese native-speaker colleague (I work in a
translation company) what it meant and he said "目立つとか、 優
秀と"

He then gave me a couple of URLs as examples (followed by his
brief comments)

抜きんでた能力持つ人

最近の企業は、尖った人材を採用したいみたいです
平凡で従順な部下より、何かに秀でた部下がほしい、ということ

Perhaps "sharp, quick, quickwitted" could be left out, and
no.3 definition just made "outstanding, cutting edge,
superior." I've just added superior because according to the
same colleague, 尖った can have a slightly negative sense, too,
in the same way "superior" can.

I've pushed that to a third sense. I really wonder if it isn't just an extended use of sense 1. The Weblio thesaurus is really too broad to be reliable, and I can find no reference which goes that far.

  Comments:
I added (i) the pronunciation とんがった and (ii) meaning number [2]. It came up in the phrase "尖った研究者," so I thought it needed a number 2 meaning to express this non-literal meaning.
