I don't see うまみ for 甘味/甘み in the yahoo kokugos. Deleting it and also splitting out かんみ. |

Does うまみ really belong in this entry? We already have 旨味, etc for it. None of my references have 甘味 for うまみ.
Not sure what Rene's 3-way split would entail. |

those aren't ateji for かんみ, which is the reading that holds this entry together. it should be split into three. |

Haha! ;-)
Well, to the best of my knowledge, that's correct, and matches
my proposal. I have no inclination to go further with it for
the time being. |

How does this look? You put restrictions thus: [よみかた][漢字形]

Genius WaEi @
- sweet 甘さ;

How do we specify that this sense is only pronounced
Actually, the following entry in Kodansha suggests that あまみ may be used for sweets as well(?)
And Kojien corroborates with its sense #2 of あまみ: あまい味のもの。
But it gets a little complicated when I look up かんみ in Kojien and Kodansha. Maybe we need to split this entry into one entry
for amami and one for kanmi? We don't have the "charm" sense in EDICT, and that's only for the かんみ reading, it seems:
KODANSHA
sweetness
charm
.
[some time later ...] OK, I've just drawn up a set of definitions based on so many dictionary searches that I can't document
them all.
It'd take too much time and take up a lot of space here.
I suggest something like this breakdown (according to the 3 different readings)
- umami
1 taste; flavour
2 charm; appeal
- kanmi
1 sweetness; sugary taste
2 sweets; dessert; cake
3 taste; flavour
4 charm; appeal
- amami
1 sweetness; sugary taste
2 sweets; cake; dessert
.
There may be more to it than that, but I'm not going to spend more time on it for now! :-) |
