KOD: a block of dried bonito made by filleting a smaller fish into two pieces.
  Comments:
I was wondering how to work in the two pieces but maybe that's not necessary.

By "kokugos" I meant this word is in every kokugo I have access to.

The "turtle shell" remark is in meikyo, daijr/s, and koj. It's probably not strictly necessary to include but it helps explain where 亀 came from.

If there are any questions, I'd be happy to explain in detail to the best of my ability.

You can slice off two 亀節 from one fish (one from each lateral side). You can further slice those two 亀節 in half to make four 本節.

〈亀/かめ/カメ〉〈節/ぶし/ブシ〉
