I'm not sure why GG5 has those glosses. The word isn't defined that way in the kokugos. |

中辞典 has:
交互の 〈相互の〉 mutual; 《文》 reciprocal; 〈交替の〉 alternate
交互に mutually; 《文》 reciprocally; 〈交替して〉 alternately; by turns
GG5:
交互に 〔互いに〕 mutually; reciprocally; one after the other; 〔交替に〕 alternately; interchangeably; by turns |
|
Comments: |
I see we removed "mutually" and "reciprocally" from our 交互に a few years ago. |

A user asked us to add "mutual" as a definition for 交互 on WaniKani. However, "mutual" and "reciprocal" are better represented by 相互 and 相互的な, not 交互. 交互 actually means "by turns" or "in turn," where one person does something after another alternately, often repeating the pattern. |

We should lead with "alternate". I'm not convinced that "mutual" and "reciprocal" are even correct.
I think the note should be kept. We have similar notes on other entries. It's good for showing why the x-ref is there. |

I was going to suggest creating a separate 交互に entry. I think that's the best approach. |

Sorry, I didn't mean to approve my "adv" edit, although the fundamental use is 交互に. I think the way Rene has set it up works and is our usual practice. We could have a separate entry for 交互に if it would help.
The references are all over the place - GG5 leads with 〜する, 中辞典 with 交互の, ....
I've added an adverbial 交互に entry to my "glossing specials" file to make sure WWWJDIC handles it correctly. |

i don't think that matches how we normally handle entries. the glosses should match the PoS with very rare exceptions, and i don't think this should be handled as one. in this case, it is rather obvious how to change the english glosses into adverbs when you use 交互に, so i don't think the adverbial glosses are needed, and i think it's potentially confusing to suggest that 交互 alone can be translated as "mutually". |

I see what you are saying, but it is used adverbially (with に) 80% of the time
and adjectivally (with の) 1% of time.
I think the comment functions as a PoS tag and that we can gloss accordingly. |

i agree that it shouldn't be [adv], but it also shouldn't be glossed as an adverb. i think the original adjectival glosses (matching the [adj-no]) were most appropriate |

No, this is not an adverb.
An adverb is a word that can be used adverbially (i.e. to modify a verb, adjective, etc.) without adding any particle.
Words that can be used adverbially after adding に (or と or で) are nouns. |
