Started the day 占領 and "occupation". It's already been acknowledged that "occupation" has ambiguity issues in English.  

This one seems particularly apt for non-military contexts, but ("e.g. territory") kind of pointed back to military use. Sankoku specifically cites buildings, daijs does as well and refs 不法占拠.  Daijs also gives a second sense just for 占領[2], which sankoku omits.  

Adding the xref at least makes it clear that this is *not* military occupation(at least, not necessarily).  

"exclusive possession" seems to me to be more of an [expl] than a gloss. I've tried to flesh this out a bit.

News examples include Russian occupation of Ukrainian power generation facilities, a funeral procession in Tokyo occupying 100 meters of road, a mountain of recycling materials figuratively "occupying" (using quotes 「」) a waste management fascility, and a Pokemon takeover during a parade:
