Sounds like the 門前 origin of メン in メンタンピン might be of folk etymological or otherwise uncertain origin, so it might actually be best for us to omit it. Sorry for the confusion.
See my comment on yaku (1537970・役・やく[4]) as to why I believe we should refer to rīchi, tan'yao, and pinfu as "yaku" rather than "melds" |

The メン in メンタンピン comes from メンゼン, which is one requirement for being able to declare riichi.
I think it's important to distinguish "melds" (pon/pung, chii/chow, kan/kong) from "yaku" (scoring patterns). Under standard riichi mahjong rules, there is one yaku that is not even composed of melds (chiitoitsu aka "7 pairs") |
