I'm sure it is read "トン" but as with all letters that are abbreviations of units (e.g. m, cm, l, kg), it's not considered a "reading" in the usual sense.
Not a counter. |

I've no personal experience of how "t" is read, but from Daijirin it seems to be "ティー". I' xref it to トン. |

Question: when "t" is used to mean "ton" -
isn't it actually pronounced/read as トン?
That's my impression, at least. |

No worries. This sense has more Japanese context than the others in Daijirin. |

Plenty of our letter entries have one or two
extra senses without having every single sense
that's in daij. I'm not opposed to adding more
senses but I don't see the point of an "all or
nothing" approach.
I can't recall ever seeing T or M used this
way but I've seen H and S like this plenty of
times. |

Dajirin also has ton, tera and temperature (t for Celsius; T for absolute), but doesn't have Taisho.
GG5 and ルミナス only have the alphabetic sense. |
|
Comments: |
I've never seen T (or S or M) used this way in Japanese. If we are going to extend this entry beyond just the alphabateic sense we probably should follow Daijirin as well. Moi, I'd leave it just as sense 1. |
