While enwiki says "Sports days (British English) or field days (American English) are _events_ ..." and google's automatic dictionary (unsure what it's based on)
says "an occasion..."
But it's not even about what the single-language dictionaries define this or that as, it's how it's actually used. These events are not normally referred to as
"athletic meets" in the US or the UK. Similarly it's not referred to as "運動会の日" with any level of frequency in Japanese (運動会:運動会の日 1:2000 in the
ngrams).
The most natural-sounding translation will be field day or sports day, a gloss that appears in GG5's entry as well as in several of GG5's and Eijiro's example
sentences. It's definitely not an error, |

But 運動会 doesn't refer to just any athletic meet, normally. In the absolute majority of cases it refers to a one-day affair at schools
where all students appear. Similar things exist in the Western world where they are referred to as "sports day" or "field day", not
"athletic meet" (with the possible exception of commonwealth countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong (based on the Google
results)). "Athletic meet" is good to include because daijs says it can be wider (i.e. they mention 職場 and 地域) but the entry definitely
needs the other two definitions as well. |
