  Refs:
drunk:
(Oxford) affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of one's faculties or behaviour
(Collins) intoxicated with alcohol to the extent of losing control over normal physical and mental functions
prog: ちょっと酔っ払っている He's a bit high [tipsy].
  Comments:
I don't think there are any situations where 酔っ払う couldn't be used for "drunk". Both describe quite high (but not necessarily extreme) degrees of intoxication. In my experience, there's no difference in nuance.

  Comments:
I think that's the point of meikyo's definition: so drunk that you lose motor control, have trouble standing up, speaking clearly. you canbe "drunk" i english without any of that happening. but it is quite embedded in 酔っ払う's definition.

GG5: get 「drunk [tipsy, plastered, pickled, 《米》loaded, 《英》squiffy].
  Comments:
None of my JEs has "very". I think they are probably about equivalent in that sense (酔う is rather broader.)

  Comments:
shouldn't it be somehow distinguished from plain 酔う though? many dics use the word 泥酔 to define this

  Comments:
I assumed the っ was the typical intensifier, but I see it's not. No よぱらう.
