You'll all be pretty annoyed if you decide this really is a "crescent moon". But I am reasonbly-ish confident.
Not saying everyone completely understands the names of all of the phases of the moon, or that poor automated E->J translations haven't manufacture a small amount of "evidence" that this includes crescents, but a google image search is pretty overwhelmingly half-moons, and here's one more reference as a sanity check:

上弦の月（アクティブの時期）：
月が半月になる状態。
美しい姿を弓に張った弦になぞらえ、弦月（げんげつ）や弓張月（ゆみはりづき）と呼ばれます。
His picture is a slightly less "half" than I would like, but he seems to get the meaning. Is "月が半月" potentially slightly-less than 半月 in his mind... maybe.
He also has a 下弦の月 photo, which I think slightly missed the mark in timing, but it's just a personal phot. "ちょうど半月になる状態" seems less ambiguous than above.
下弦の月（デトックスの時期）：
新月へ向かい少しずつ細くなっていく途中、ちょうど半月になる状態。
真夜中に昇り昼ごろに沈むため、夜明け以降の青空に見えることがあります。
満月の時に蓄えたものを放出していく過程の時。 |

It only *looks* like 2 xrefs. It's because 弓張り提灯 has an edit in progress, so there are two copies: the active one and the edited one. Once it's confirmed, the second won't be there. |
