Perhaps the note for sense 3 could still include letters? Currently it just looks like という is in the middle of something, while the letters make it clear that it's preceded and followed by the same noun. |

I don't think it's a new sense - just a slightly different handling of sense #1. M&T translate it as "called; that says 〜; that". I think all that is needed is a tweak to sense 1. |

One of the most common usages of という as a conjunction between clauses of a complex sentence somehow is omitted in the dictionary |

There's a use of this phrase which I thought might be worth adding -- it confused me when I ran across it. It's the form XというX... such as 壁という壁. I've not been able to find an English definition, but at the reference link I did find this explanation:
【3】「という」には、「XというX」の形で、上下に同じ名詞を用いて意味を強める用法がある。Xと呼ばれるものは全部、すべてのX、Xこそは、の意である。「人間という人間すべてに共通する機能」
So it's a way of adding emphasis... where I've seen it, it has the sense of "every X" or "all the X" or "every possible X". Such as "壁という壁はけばけばしい大きなピンクの花で覆われた" -- "all the walls were covered with garish pink flowers".
I've not added a meaning; I though I'd let you decide if it's appropriate for the JMDICT. |
