Tanaka: あの態度、きつく注意してやらんと。 I have to tell him off for his bad attitude.
かつて、この国では、地域全体が他人の子供に注意を与えたものだが、今は、そのような大人の姿を目にすることは極めて少ない。 The restraining role that the community once played is losing its force as adults become reluctant to reprimand other people's unruly children. |
|
Comments: |
The JEs usually have 2 or 3 senses and appear to have the proposed 4th sense merged with the third. That said, it does appear that 注意する does have a reprimand/tell off nuance.
I'll reindex some sentences. |

When asked in an online forum to give examples of phrases you could say that count as 「人に注意をする」、six native Japanese speakers gave several answers, including:
・そんなことしていいんだっけ?
・やめなさい
・ちょっと、みんな並んでるんですけど(to a person cutting in line)
・見たぞ。子供さんが先に並んでいたのに割り込んではダメだろう?恥を知れ!今すぐ後ろに並べ!
These responses in particular are not utterances one would make in order to "warn" or "caution" someone.
One answerer also mentioned that he personally would not call any exchange of words 注意 if it didn't have some form of righteous anger behind it.
The scope of use of 注意する as a verb is such that I believe it warrants an additional English gloss. |
