Hi, I question whether the definitions "cause; reason" are logically correct. According to that, the example sentence, あなたの頭痛は過労のせいだ, ought to mean "your headache is the cause of / reason for overwork", which is the exact opposite of what it actually does mean. |

I agree that having のせいで would be useful. |

"せい" is a fairly common reading. As far as I can see, this particular "せい" seems to be used in an expression in the form of "のせいで". This form picks up many Google hits. Your [A] link gives many examples, but of particular interest is this entry: ~のせいで , meaning: all along of; along of; at the hands of; because of; courtesy of; due to; owing to. The other sentence examples seem to be based upon this.
Your combined dictionary gives the following:-
のせいで(人)には~する以外選択の余地がなくなる 【?】 leave someone no choice but to; WI4
のせいで(人)の生理が遅れる 【?】 cause someone's period to be late; WI4
The text which I was reading was this: "あらしのせいで" [in context, "caused by the storm"].
When I searched for "せい", it was not much help, unless I knew the answer before searching.
When I searched the Glossing, I got the following:-
あらしのせいで。
のせいで (exp) because of; caused by; KD
Strangely it did not give any help on "あらし" which is in the main dictionary in two forms, but it did give "のせいで", which was a good fit for my text. However, when I tried to locate "のせいで" in the main dictionary, I could not find anything.
I am hoping that I am not wasting your time here, but I wondered if this main entry could be expanded to include the expression "のせいで" so that the context of "cause" is made clear by the total expression; when such a common reading of "せい" crops up. |
