Isn't the "thing inside one's body ..." gloss sufficient for explaining 虫の知らせ? Whether the insect is real or figurative doesn't seem relevant to me. Meikyo and shinmeikai don't even mention the traditional belief.
It might be better to lead with the descriptive gloss and add "believed to ..."

I still feel quite strongly that an explanatory note on sense 3 is appropriate and helpful. I want to put an xref here from 虫の知らせ but what's the point if we don't explain that this was originally used literally? I think the etymology/traditional belief has bearings on how the word is used/understood today as well.
