Should "bone storage urn" maybe be "funerary urn" instead? Because funerary urns are as I understand it for both just ashes and 
bones. And "ashes" in a Western context is apparently also mostly bone fragments, apparently.

Dair doesn't mention Okinawa. Koj has "洗骨葬" and mentions it is a practice in parts of SE Asia, China, Taiwan, Okinawa & Korea.

琉球列島には、洗骨という習俗があった。洗骨とは、遺体を数年後(3年か5年程)に墓か
ら出し、丁寧に洗ってから、厨子(沖縄では特に骨甕のことを指す)に納め、墓に戻す方法
である。
