It's a standard way of making romaji "round trip safe". Hyphens don't work if you try and convert the romaji to kana. |

I've been working on identifying glosses in jmnedict that are
transliterations, but I wasn't expecting to find an apostrophe
used like this. Is there reason for it? Could we use a hyphen
instead? I usually only use apostrophes for ん -> n' |
