『紬には様々な品種がありますが、多くは先染めで染色されます。たとえば、紬の品種の1つである結城紬は「たたき染め」という独自の絣染めを行う特徴があります。
「たたき染め」は絣の柄を綺麗に出すために考案された染めの技法です。

Having seen a "Tataki-zomé" workshop offered in a botanical garden in France, I found online that such workshops also exist in Japan (and elsewhere in the world). 

After further online  research, it seems that the term is also used in Kasuri (絣) dyeing.
