It's not exclusively used self-referentially though. (I once interviewed Mitsuhiro Kimura of the "shin-uyokudantai" Issuikai and as I remember it he told me they didn't turn away members of 任侠団体 from their meetings)
The note should maybe mention it's a euphemism as well |

"slang" seems a bit off, though of course it would never be
used in any official capacity. I've heard Mitsuhiro Kimura of
the uyoku group Issuikai use it in formal speech though... he
wouldn't agree it's slang, for sure. |
