Yes, we thrashed that around with 麦酒/ビール some years ago. I've never been comfortable with loanwords (and names) being called gikun but I can live with it.
I've fiddled the 桑港 entry. |

If it's not ateji, it's gikun. It can't be neither.
I wasn't proposing that we delete this entry. By adding サンフランシスコ to 桑港/そうこう, we could drop any mention of 桑港 from this entry. 桑港 is more or less obsolete, no matter how it's read. |

I don't think it's an ateji (桑港 derived from 桑方西斯哥 + 港) and I don't think it's a gikun reading either. I really think it was best the way it was as two entries. |

Then again, it's not ateji in the strict sense. Maybe better to add サンフランシスコ as a gikun reading to 桑港/そうこう? |
