Do you have a source for that? The kokugos disagree. As do I actually, if somebody asks me 炭酸を飲む? at dinner, I know they're asking if I want soda water, not coke or something similar.

GG5 does have this sentence: ►俺, 炭酸だめなんだよ. I can't drink ┏carbonated beverages [fizzy drinks].
but I think this is just sense 1, a more literal translation would be "I don't like carbonic acid" and it's understood from context the speaker is talking about drinks.
