I assumed that the other glosses referred to a more modern usage unrelated to geishas. gg5 and prog refer to ransoms but the kokugos seem to focus only on geisha.

i'd guess the "buyers" tended to be wealthy customers not their parents or 
whoever. the rest of the glosses seem misleading
