Needs a second opinion from one of our aquatic animal experts, but it seems this entry wrongly combines two quite distinct animals into one otter.
Recommend split up. The reading うみうそ (おそ) is exclusive to the sea lion (confusingly called "sea otter" in the Nara period), rakko is the (real) sea otter.
There is nothing linking the two but the headword 海獺. Readings are distinct; meanings too. |
