Daijirin has a second philosophical sense, but I can't extract a gloss any different from the first.

Cambridge (taster): "a small amount or short experience of something that is intended either to make you understand what it is like or to make you want more of it"
  Comments:
Taster, maybe?
I think "experience" is still the correct word in that context.

There's another meaning to 体験 not covered in most dictionaries, in things like "手作り体験", "そば打ち体験", where it
means "to try out something". Sure, it's an experience, but I feel there's probably a better way of translating this,
though the words elude me right now... it's a tryout in the sense that it's "Trying something to find out about it.", but
not as in "A test of the suitability of a performer" (from Google's own dictionary). It's really a demonstration (that you
get to take part in)...?
