I'm with Jim and Rene. I don't see the need for sense 2 at all. "Japanese (language)" is perfectly sufficient.
We don't have two senses for 英語 or any other language entry. |

While I don't mind this split, I too feel it's not necessary. 日本語 is used when the context is that of languages in general. A Japanese person at a linguistics conference will say 日本語; not 国語, which is a 我が国ish insider's term. In such a context the two senses are the same. |

Well, I think it might be helpful because when you talk
about 日本語教育, 日本語教師 etc. you are exclusively talking
about Japanese as a second language. If it's a subject
studied in school, 日本語 will always mean JSL. |
