There's actually quite a lot of hits for クソ勉強 in Google Books, seems to have been esp. common around the 1950s to
1970s, but I find examples going back to 1912.
e.g.
(we have 点取り虫 as an entry)
1958: "ところがそうはいっても、中学時代でもそうであったように、いわゆるクソ勉強度々あったと思われる"
1964: "そこでもし学校の成績がおちてきたら、私は皆さはない、暗記暗記のクソ勉強で入学する人であり"
1983: "これは小中学校時代のクソ勉強とはちがいます。あなたの血となり肉となり、精神を支え、勇気がわいてくる勉強です。"
I guess くそ+noun with the meaning "doing something to the extreme" is not all that common (not at all the results are
vs use). The older usage in Google Books does seem "crystallized" as an expression meaning "studying hard", but on
twitter there are also the occasional mention that seem to be of the "stupid/damn studying" variety. I don't think we
have to cover that here though. |

OTOH if you just go by the kanji you might think it means faecology or something like that.
Given くそ as a prefix can mean both a lot and very little, perhaps it should stay. |

This seems of questionable value to me. I
don't think it means to cram for an exam but
just to study "fucking hard" |
