We do usually include lit glosses for idiomatic expressions like this (where the imagery is different from that of the equivalent English expression).
I think the x-ref is fine. We could also add an x-ref to 豚に真珠 pointing here. |

It's case-by-case but we'd usually include a literal version if the expression is also used with that meaning. In this case, it doesn't seem to happen. The xref is possibly useful to indicate that there's an alternative equivalent expression. |

Is there a rule for which idioms should have
literal translations and which shouldn't,
then? Because deciding it's "no use" here
seems rather arbitrary to me.
this is more common than 豚に真珠 so I don't
think the xref is helpful. |
