wiki: In the medical profession, a general practitioner (GP) is a medical doctor who treats acute and chronic illnesses and provides
preventive care and health education to patients.
daijs: 個人で医院・病院を経営し診療している医師。
I don't think GP is a good translation.

i'm just questioning whether it belongs here at all. if so, i don't have a problem with them being in the same sense

ルミナス和英辞典 has "general practitioner" as its gloss for 開業医. None of the refs I looked at indicated that 開業医 meant specializing in a particular branch. I'm quite happy to put GP back into a sense of its own.

i think there's a slight distinction in that your local plastic surgeon's office is a 'private practice' but he is not a 'general practitioner'. unless i'm mistaken, "general practitioner" isn't actually in gg5 (or eijiro, etc.) as a translation of 開業医. what i see is
 一般[全科]開業医 a general practitioner (略: GP).
