i feel the original version of the note was better as: 1) it was briefer, and 2) シナ is often used without intend to offend in compounds such as 支那そば.  (though it is still not politically correct in those usages).  changing "sometimes" to "often" in the original

The original note on this word didn't state the offensive nature of the term strongly enough.  Wiki notes that the word "is considered socially unacceptable and subject to kotobagari," despite some Japanese being unaware of its offensive nature.  With stuff like this, seems best to overstate it rather than understate it and lead to misunderstandings.
