Comparing various rulesets, I think "12 points" is not actually dated, it might be regional, some use it like that still today.

in my 1952 books, it's given as 10 points.
in a 1977 rulebook, it's stated it used to be 
12 points, but is "recently" 10. Older English 
translations of the game hachihachi (e.g. 
Palmer's, mid-Meiji) say it's 12 points.
