I was concentrating on sense 2, but I don't think the romanized Japanese term has any real traction in English. No mention in Wikipedia (apart from the name of a warship.). None of the JEs uses it, for example. While it's bland, I'd stick with the description. |

Do we want to use the Japanese names in sense 1 or not? Not at all sure about that, but it does look nicer than "Xth month in the lunar
calendar" by itself. Should it be capital N also? |

I yield. Seems it's common.
睦月 and 師走 have the Gregorian names in JMdict.
如月, 弥生, 卯月, 皐月, 水無月, 文月, 葉月, 神無月, 霜月 don't. Some, such as 如月 and 卯月 have them in GG5. |

Re that "近年新暦月に使用される場合もあります。", I feel we need a bit more evidence before considering adding Gregorian calendar month names to these lunar month entries.
I'll close this to trim the ques, then reopen for a while. |

I hadn't actually noticed that bit but they do say:
"※年号の横の 【長月 ながつき】 などの名称は本来は旧暦の異名ですが、_近年新暦月に使用される場合もあります。_" (my emphasis) |

Yes, I was misreading the first column of the lunar calendar table. We are indeed in the7th month of the 旧暦. I don't think that 長月 on the calendar you linked is correct. |

Today is 15/7 - lunar O-Bon.
I don't have the time right nowbut
I'lldig up more examples of names of
lunar months being used to refer to
months in the current calendar. |

My inclination is to keep the Julian/Gregorian month names right away from the kanji forms used in the lunar calendar, as there is not a 1-1 correspondence between them. I realise that forms like 九月 have a presence in both camps, but 菊月, etc. don't really mean September, despite what a menu-writer might think/say.
BTW, isn't it currently the eighth month in the lunar calendar? |

This was written out on a menu at a ryotei
where I ate yesterday - the meaning was
obviously "September" (in the current
calendar) as it's still July (strictly
speaking "the seventh month") in the lunar
calendar.
Should all of the main named lunar months
(i. emaybe not all the obscure synonyms)
have an extra sense, like the x月 entries
have? |
